Removal (Front Cylinder)
Refer to
Figure 66
when performing this proce-
dure.
1. Remove the front cylinder head as described in
this chapter.
2. Remove the front chain guide by lifting it from
its seat in the crankcase and pulling it from the cam
chain tunnel in the cylinder.
NOTE
Note that the timing mark on the tim
ing gear (A,
Figure 67
), the mark on
the cam chain drive assembly (B) and
the center of the drive assembly shaft
(C) align when the front cylinder is at
TDC. They must be aligned during
assembly.
3. Remove the retainer bolt (A,
Figure 68
), and
slide the retainer (B) from the slots on the shaft of
the cam chain drive assembly.
CAUTION
An oil slot (
Figure 56
) in the end of
the drive assembly shaft collects oil
that lubricates the shaft and bushing
in the cam chain drive assembly. The
shaft must be installed so this oil slot
faces up.
4. Remove the drive assembly shaft. Note that the
oil slot (A,
Figure 69
) in the shaft faces up. It must
be reinstalled in this direction during assembly.
5. Lift the cam chain/cam chain drive assembly
(
Figure 59
) from the cam chain tunnel.
6. Inspect the cam chain and its drive assembly as
described in this section.
Installation (Front Cylinder)
1. Temporarily install the alternator cover onto the
crankcase. Make sure the front cylinder is still set to
top dead center on the compression stroke.
NOTE
The cam chain drive assemblies are
not interchangeable. The rear cylin
der cam chain drive assembly is iden
tified by a

stamped on the gear face;
