Assembly
1. Apply grease to the balls in the ball assembly (A,
Figure 41
).
2. Lower the ball assembly (A,
Figure 41
) onto the
push screw (B). Seat the balls in the detents.
3. Invert the assembly and install it into the housing
on the inboard side of the alternator cover (
Figure
40
).
4. Turn the alternator cover over.
NOTE
The clutch will not operate smoothly
if a flat on the push screw shaft is not
opposite the
1
on the alternator cover
(B,
Figure 43
) as described in the
next step.
5. Rotate the push screw shaft so a flat is opposite
the
1
on the alternator cover (B,
Figure 43
).
6. Install the clutch lever (B,
Figure 39
) so it en-
gages the flats on the push screw shaft.
7. Hook the return spring (A,
Figure 39
) over the
post on the alternator cover.
8. Install the washer (B,
Figure 38
) and turn the
locknut (A) onto the shaft. Finger-tighten the
locknut. It will be tightened once the clutch cable
free play is adjusted.
9. Install the alternator cover as described in Chap-
ter Five.
10. Adjust the clutch cable free play (Chapter
Three).
CLUTCH CABLE REPLACEMENT
In time, the clutch cable will stretch to the point
where it can no longer function and must be re-
placed.
1. Remove the fuel tank as described in Chapter
Eight.
2. Disconnect the clutch cable from the hand lever
as follows:
a. At the handlebar, slide the clutch cable boot
(A,
Figure 44
) away from the adjuster.
b. Loosen the clutch cable locknut (B,
Figure
44
) and rotate the adjuster (C) to provide
maximum slack in the cable.
c. Disconnect the clutch cable end from the
hand lever.
3. Disconnect the cable end from the clutch lever as
follows:
