7. Turn the main switch on and slowly rotate the
rear wheel.
8. The speed sensor is operating properly if the
voltage is 0-5 volts.
a. If voltage is outside the specified range, re-
place the speed sensor.
b. If the voltage is between zero and 5 volts, re-
place the ignitor unit.
SWITCHES
Switches can be tested for continuity with an
ohmmeter or a test light (see Chapter One). The
continuity diagrams for various switches are in the
wiring diagrams at the back of this manual.
For example,
Figure 95
shows a continuity dia-
gram for a horn button. It shows which terminals
should have continuity when the horn switch is in a
given position. The line on the continuity diagram
indicates that there should be continuity between
the black and pink terminals when the horn button is
pressed. When the horn button is pressed, an ohm-
meter connected to the black and pink terminals
should indicate little or no resistance (a test lamp
should light).
The horn switch diagram also indicates there
should be no continuity between these terminals
when the switch is free. When the horn button is re-
leased, the ohmmeter should indicate infinite resis-
tance (a test lamp should not light) between the
black and pink terminals.
When testing switches, note the following:
1. First check the fuses in the relevant circuit as de-
scribed in this chapter.
2. Check the battery as described in Chapter Three.
Charge the battery to the correct state of charge, if
required.
3. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery if
the switch connectors are not disconnected from the
circuit.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to start the engine with
the battery negative cable discon
nected. This will damage the wiring
harness.
4. When separating two connectors, pull the con-
nector housings and not the wires.
5. After locating a defective circuit, check the con-
nectors to make sure they are clean and properly
connected. Check all wires going into a connector
housing to make sure each wire is properly posi-
tioned and the wire end is not loose.
6. To properly connect connectors, push them to-
gether until they click into place.
7. When replacing a handlebar switch assembly,
route the cables correctly so they will not be crimped
when the handlebar is turned from side to side.
Left Handlebar Switch Replacement
1. Remove the fuel tank as described in Chapter
Eight.
