Marking timing chains
– Mark timing chains before removing (e.g. with paint, arrow

pointing in direction of rotation).

Note

Do not mark chain by way of centre punch, notch or the like.

Removing and installing camshaft tim‐

ing chain

⇒ “4.4 Removing and installing camshaft adjuster”, page 105

Conditions:
• Gearbox removed
• Flywheel removed
• Sump removed
• Cover for timing chain removed
• Cylinder head cover removed
Removing:
– Turn engine by vibration damper to adjustment markings.
• Ground tooth of drive sprocket -arrow A- must align with bear‐

ing joint.

• The marked hole -arrow- must be in line with the mark on the

oil pump.

Note

This position is reached only after every 4th full rotation.
