Removing and installing timing chain
cover
Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Hand drill with plastic brush
♦ Safety glasses
♦ Sealant - D 176 501 A1-
Removing:
– Removing gearbox ⇒ Rep. gr. 34 ; Removing and installing
gearbox .
– Remove sump
.
– Remove bolts -1 and 2- for cover.
Caution
Avoid damage to cylinder head gasket. If the cylinder head
gasket is bent excessively, it can be kinked. A kinked cylinder
head gasket must be renewed.
– Pull off cover from cylinder block horizontally.
– Press crankshaft oil seal out of lower timing chain cover.
Installing:
• Specified torques

Caution
The lubrication system can be soiled by sealant residue. Care‐
fully cover open parts of engine so that no sealant residue can
fall into it.
– Remove remaining sealant on the timing chain cover and cyl‐
inder head using rotating plastic brush etc. Wear safety gog‐
gles.
– Clean sealing surfaces; they must be free of oil and grease.
