Note
♦
Do not interchange used bearings.
♦
Bearing shells worn down to nickel layer must be renewed.
– Remove main bearing cap and clean bearing cap and bearing
journal.
– Place a length of Plastigage corresponding to the width of the
bearing on the bearing journal or in the bearing shells.
• The Plastigage must lie in the middle of the bearing shell.
– Fit main bearing caps and tighten without twisting the crank‐
shaft.
– Remove main bearing cap again.
– Compare width of Plastigage with the measurement scale.
Radial clearance:
• New: 0.02 … 0.06 mm
• Wear limit: 0.10 mm

Allocation of main bearing shells
Allocation of main bearing shells differs according to manufac‐
turing date of crankshaft.
The manufacturing date is embossed on the outer crankshaft web
of No. 1 cylinder.
1 - Manufacturing date of crankshaft (DDMMYY)
2 - Letters for allocation of bearing shells
3 - Part number
– Check how main bearing shells are allocated, according to
manufacturing date.
Allocation of main bearing shells, up to and including manu‐
facturing date 230912
Allocation of main bearing shells, from manufacturing date

Allocation of main bearing shells, up to
and including manufacturing date
23.09.12
Note
It is essential to observe the manufacturing date. The manufac‐
turing date is embossed on the crankshaft web. Establish manu‐
.
Main bearing shells of the correct thickness are allocated to the
cylinder block and crankshaft at the factory. Coloured dots are
used to identify the thickness of the bearing shells.
If the cylinder block or crankshaft is changed, the crankshaft
bearing shells must be reallocated.
