with the engine running idling; and set the wheels in the extreme right-hand position; furthermore
perform work as per items 4, 6, 7.
10. Fill oil in the hydraulic system as follows:
- fill 1,5 l of pure oil in the tank;
- start the engine and add oil up to the upper mark; then, when the engine runs idling,
bleed air out of the hydraulic system by turning the steering wheel either side as far as it will go
(till air stops bubbling in the tank);
- stop the engine;
- check the oil level in the tank and add it if need be;
- fit the filler plug of the tank back.
5.4.2.3 Testing for free wheeling. Angular play of the steering wheel should be checked,
rocking the steering wheel to this and that side till the steerable wheels begin to turn.
Angular play of the steering wheel should be checked on a completely equipped truck when
the engine runs idling. The truck should be placed on an even ground with dry, hard surface (as-
phalt, concrete). The steerable wheels position must correspond to the straightforward travel of
the truck, the steering hydraulic system should be filled, and air evacuated out of the working flu-
id.
Angular play of the steering wheel should not exceed 25° (12° for a new truck).
If the free wheeling exceeds this value and clearances in steering gear elements are elim-
inated, adjust the steering unit engagement. Drain oil from the unit before adjusting it.
5.4.2.4 Steering unit engagement adjustment. Adjust the tightness in the bearings 14
(Fig. 61), and the clearance between the nut-rod 8 and the sector 1.
The threaded joint (the screw 7, the balls 6 and the nut-rod 8) and the distributor unit
cannot be adjusted during operation. Do not disarrange the set of these parts.
1. Prior to adjusting the tightness in the bearings 14 fix the steering unit in the jaws tak-
ing it by the gear case eyes, disconnect the universal joint. Rotate the shaft 15 (see Fig. 62), fix the
nut-rod 8 (see fig. 61) and the sector 1 in one of the outmost positions. Determine the torque nec-
essary to crank the shaft 15 (see Fig. 62) from the outmost position to the middle one (crank the
shaft with the angle 30°). If the torque is less than 0.9 N.m (0.1 kgf.m), adjust the tightness in the
bearings 14 (see Fig. 61), by decreasing the number of the gaskets 12. After the adjustment the
torque necessary for cranking the shaft 15 (see Fig. 62) should be in the range 0.9-1.5 N.m (0.1-
0.15 kgf.m).
2. To check the clearance in the gear engagement, rotate the shaft 15 and fix the nut-rod
and the gear sector in the middle position (divide the full number of the shaft 15 rpm by two).
Check the clearance by rocking the drop arms in both directions (there will be slight rat-
tle heard in the gear engagement) or by rotating the shaft 15 to the left and to the right before
twisting the torsion bar 17 with the fixed sector. To adjust the gear engagement, remove the drop
arm, the cap 19 (see Fig. 61) and the cap 22. Turn the collar steps 21 with the bearings 18 clock-
wise (if seen from the sector shaft side) by the same angle to eliminate the clearance in the gear
engagement. After the collar steps are turned, one of the holes in them should be in the cavity
which lays in the located diametrically threaded holes in the case 9 for the caps 19 and 22 fixa-
tions. Place the caps so that the locks 10 enter the holes in the collar steps 21 and are located op-
posite each other. If there is a small misalignment of the locks and the holes, turn the collar steps
in either direction until they align paying attention that there is no clearance in the gear engage-
ment. After the adjustment the caps 19 and 22 can be turned by 90°, 180° and 270° in comparison
with the initial position.
The tightening torque necessary for cranking the shaft 15 (see Fig. 62) in the middle po-
sition is to be 2.7-4.1 N.m (0.27-0.41 kgf.m).
