Trouble
Possible Reason
Trouble-shooting
Storage Batteries
Battery cannot ensure re-
quired engine crankshaft rotation
speed
The battery charge is below
permissible limit
Excessive voltage drop in
starter supply circuit
Charge battery and check
generator and voltage regulator
Clean up battery terminals
and wire lugs, lubricate them
with petroleum jelly. If required
tighten the fastening of starter
wire lugs
All or some battery cells are
faulty
Get the battery repaired
Rapid battery self-discharge
Contamination of battery
outlets by dirt or electrolyte
splashed over battery surface
Wipe the battery with a dry
cloth and then with the cloth
wetted in 10 % liquid ammonia
or soda ash solution
Contamination of electrolyte
with foreign impurities
Discharge battery with cur-
rent equal to 1/10 of battery ca-
pacity down to 1.1-1.2 V per a
battery cell. Drain out electro-
lyte, rinse battery, fill it with
fresh solution and charge
Electrolyte level in battery
drops too quickly
Electrolyte boils out
Monoblock unit damaged
Check the voltage regulator
Get the battery repaired
Electrolyte ejects out of vent
hole of one or several battery
cells during charging
Excessive level of electro-
lyte
Excessive charging current
Use rubber syringe to re-
move excess electrolytic solu-
tion
Check the voltage regulator
Short circuit in one of battery
cells
Get the battery repaired
When charging completely
discharged battery, voltage and
temperature of electrolyte rise
quickly with intensive gassing
whereas density rises insignifi-
cantly
Sulphating of plates due to
not using the battery for a long
time or operating the battery
with the low level of electrolyte
over a long period of time or
systematic undercharging
Sulphated plates are repaired
by charge-discharge cycle with
current not exceeding 1/20 of
battery capacity at initial electro-
lyte density not exceeding 1.12
g/cm
3
. Highly sulphated plates
should be rejected
Power Take-off
Power take-off (PTO) cannot
be engaged
The pneumatic chamber dia-
phragm of the power take-off
engagement mechanism is dam-
aged
Replace the diaphragm
