Chapter 3 – Configuring the nTier700 VTL

Review the Configuration Process
The following steps summarize the process for configuring the nTier700 VTL for use in
your environment. The hardware configuration steps use the BlueScale web interface
to the nTier700 VTL. The steps for configuring virtual tape libraries (VTLs) and
deduplication use the VTL Console and are described in the
Implementing nTier
Deduplication guide.
1.
If necessary, add the nTier700 VTL to a network domain. Contact your network
administrator for assistance, if needed.
Note:
You may have added the nTier700 VTL to a domain when you
connected it to the network.

If needed, configure additional network connections to the nTier700 VTL (see
Configuring Additional Network Connections on page 50. For example, these
connections can be used to connect the nTier to additional networks or to connect
the nTier700 VTL to an iSCSI or Fibre Channel tape library.
Note:
The IP address for Ethernet port 1, which is used to access the
BlueScale web interface, is configured from the operator panel
during installation (see
Setting the IP Address for Ethernet Port 1 on
page 42).
3. If you plan to use remote power management, configure RMM (see Configuring
Remote Power Management
on page 52).

If necessary, configure a tape library as an iSCSI target or Fibre Channel target for
backup operations using the VTL Console as described in the
Implementing nTier
Deduplication guide.
5. If desired, use the VTL Console to configure replication of the data on your
nTier700 VTL as described in the
Implementing nTier Deduplication guide. In the
event of a crisis or disaster, you can use the replicated data to continue operations
and rebuild your system once the disaster has passed.
Accessing the BlueScale Web Interface
The BlueScale web interface lets you configure network connections to the
nTier700 VTL, monitor the status of system components, including the drives and the
battery backup, and view energy metrics. Read
Using the BlueScale Web Interface on
page 59 for detailed information about using the Spectra BlueScale web interface.
