NAS Network Attached Storage. The name given to dedicated data storage
technology which can be connected directly to a computer network to
provide centralized data access and storage to users on the network.
Network-attached storage consists of hard disk storage, including multi-
disk RAID systems for storing data and a server that processes the data
and maps file locations to the network-attached device. The NAS device
delivers the data to the user in the form of files. The NAS device is
attached to a local area network (typically, an Ethernet network) and
assigned an IP address. A NAS device can exist outside the server in a
LAN.
Network File System
A distributed file system and its associated network protocol commonly
implemented in UNIX systems, although most other computer systems
have implemented NFS clients and servers.
Network Interface Card
An expansion card that provides an I/O connection from a computer or
other type of node to a network.
NFS
Acronym for Network File System.
NIC Acronym for Network Interface Card.
NIST
Acronym for National Institute of Standards and Technology.
NDPM Network Data Management Protocol. Defines a common architecture for
the way heterogeneous file servers on a network are backed up.
O
operating system
A computer program that manages the hardware and software resources
of a computer. At the foundation of all system software, an operating
system performs basic tasks such as controlling and allocating memory,
prioritizing system requests, controlling input and output devices,
facilitating networking, and managing files. It also may provide a
graphical web interface for higher level functions. It forms a platform on
which other software runs.
