Maintenance
This chapter describes how to replace a data drive in the Spectra nTier700 VTL.
Replacing a Data Drive
If one or more data drives in the nTier are not functioning properly, the Blade tab on
the Overview page of the BlueScale web interface is red, indicating an error condition.
A red X also appears next to the malfunctioning drive in the Drive Status screen on the
operator panel on the blade containing the malfunctioning drive.
Although the RAID 6 volume in the blade can continue to operate with one or two
malfunctioning drives, you run the risk of data loss if a third drive fails. Replace a
malfunctioning drive as soon as possible to avoid degraded performance.
Prepare for Replacement
Spectra Logic recommends that you back up your nTier700 VTL configuration before
replacing a data drive. Refer to the
Implementing nTier Deduplication
guide for
information.
Caution:
Do not replace a drive without first powering it down.
Estimated Time Required
Replacing a data drive takes about ten minutes. This procedure can be performed
without interrupting the operation of the nTier700 VTL. As soon as you install the new
drive, it automatically powers on and the RAID-6 volume to which the drive belongs is
rebuilt using the parity data stored on the remaining drives in the volume.
Note:
Rebuilding the RAID-6 volume may take up to 28 hours. During
this time, the throughput of data to the RAID volume is reduced
until rebuild is complete and the drives are resynchronized.
