202 Vehicle care
If the coolant level is low, there may
be a leak in the cooling system:
1. Look for leaks at the radiator
hoses and connections, heater
hoses and connections, radiator
and water pump.
Take care when checking these
areas as they may still be hot.
2. Check the fan belt.
3. If a major leak or other problems
are found, do not run the engine
until all problems have been
repaired.
4. If you do not find any problems,
refill the coolant reservoir.
See Adding engine coolant
(overheated engine) on page 203.
Danger
Do not remove the coolant
reservoir cap if the engine and
radiator are still hot. Scalding
fluid and steam can be blown
out under pressure which could
cause serious burns.
Caution
If you see or hear steam coming
from the engine, stop and turn
the ignition control knob to the
lock position. Do not open the
bonnet until the engine has
cooled down.
If the fan is not operating and steam
is visible:
1. Turn the ignition control knob to
the lock position.
2. Move away from the vehicle
without opening the bonnet.
3. Let the engine cool down.
4. When steam is no longer visible,
carefully open the bonnet.
5. Have the vehicle serviced as
soon as possible.
Cooling system checks
When no steam is visible:
If illuminates for more than
30 seconds:
1. As soon as it is safe to do so,
stop the vehicle on the side of
the road.
2. Switch off the air conditioning.
3. Leave the engine idling for about
3 minutes.
4. Exit the vehicle and audibly check
that the cooling fan is working.
If the fan is working and remains
illuminated:
1. Turn the ignition control knob to
the lock position.
2. Open the bonnet.
3. Check the coolant level.
Without undoing the coolant
reservoir filler cap, look at the level
from outside the container.
