Seats and Restraints
. . . 302
OLDER CHILDREN
Older children who have
outgrown booster seats should
sit in a rear seat, restrained by a
properly fastened safety belt.
The child restraint manufacturer's
instructions should state the
weight and height limitations for
the particular restraint.
To determine whether a child is
ready to transition out of a booster
into a rear seat, check your local
laws and check the following:
• Have the child sit all the way
back on the seat. Do the child’s
knees bend at the seat edge?
If you answered "yes" to this
question, proceed to the next
question.
If you answered "no" to this
question, the child should
continue to use a booster seat.
• With the child sitting all the
way back on the seat, with
knees bent at the seat edge,
buckle the safety belt around
the child.
Does the shoulder belt rest on
the shoulder?
If you answered "yes" to this
question, proceed to the next
question.
If you answered "no" to this
question, try to use the rear
shoulder belt comfort guide.
See "Shoulder Belt Comfort
Guides" earlier in this section.
If the shoulder belt still does
not rest on the shoulder, the
child should continue to use a
booster seat.
• Does the lap belt fit low and
snug on the hips, touching the
thighs?
If you answered "yes" to this
question, proceed to the next
question.
If you answered "no" to this
question, the child should
continue to use a booster seat.
