Parking on Hills
CAUTION
When towing a trailer, avoid
parking your vehicle on a hill. If
something were to go wrong,
your rig could start to move.
People could be injured and
both your vehicle and the trailer
could be damaged.
You should not park vehicles with
trailers on a grade (hill). However,
if you must park on a grade, follow
these steps:
1. Apply your regular brakes, but
don't shift into
P
(Park) for an
automatic transmission or into
gear for a manual transmission
yet.
2. If the vehicle is facing
downhill, turn the wheels
toward the curb. If it is facing
uphill, turn the wheels toward
traffic.
3. Have someone place chocks
under the trailer wheels.
4. When the wheel chocks are in
place, release the regular
brakes until the chocks absorb
the load.
5. Reapply the regular brakes.
Then apply your parking
brake, and then shift to
P
(Park) for an automatic
transmission or into
R
(Reverse) for a manual
transmission.
6. Release the regular brakes.
When you are ready to leave after
parking on a hill, be sure to hold
the regular brake pedal down
while you start the engine, shift
into gear and release the parking
brake.
Release the regular brakes.
Drive slowly until the trailer is clear
of the chocks.
Stop and have someone pick up
and store the chocks.
