page description language (PDL)
Language used to describe printing jobs to an LPS. PDL
describes the input (type, format, characteristics), performs the
processing functions (logical processing), and describes the
output (type format, font selection, accounting options). Or, a
utility that puts new JDLs onto system disk.
prints per minute
In the case of 2-sided, there are two prints on a delivered page.
random access memory (RAM)
A type of memory used by a micro processor which has the
ability to read as well as write. Storage that allows data (such as
documents) to be stored and retrieved directly by address
location without reading through any other data.
resident
In ROM
Read only memory (ROM)
A type of memory used by a micro processor which can only be
read. Solid-state memory for programmes. It cannot be
rewritten.
Request to send
One of the hardware signals in the RS-232C interface.
scan line
An individual scan of the laser device across the width of the
image. The line of video data printed in one pass of the laser
beam across the length of the xerographic drum.
serial interface
A type or method of sending codes from computer to printer or
other device, one bit of information at a time over a
communication line. Serial interfaces can function over great
distances.
skew
The rotational deviation (tilt or angle) of a character in relation to
the bottom of the document.
soft font
Font that can be transferred from diskettes in your computer to
the memory of the printer.
status sheet
A one-page printout produced by the printer when requested
through a job command. Contains information about fonts used
and errors detected in a job.
