Initially, the selection will be set to Free Width. Click on the Relative Width choice and then
close the dialog to set the Character Width to display as a percentage. You only need to
select this once and it will remain as the default.
Character Width
– This is the field that you should use to manually compress text
in the layout. It is easier to use than the Line Compression discussed above. Note that the
filed will only display in percent if you set the Proper Character Width to Relative Width % as
discussed above.
It is important to remember that if this field is used to compress a text line and the line is
used to merge text from a file using the Multiples option, the test will revert back to 100% or
as close to 100% as possible of the text is longer than allowed by the margin settings.
Specific character width settings will not be maintained after text merge, and will need to be
manually set after the text merge is completed.
Horizontal and Vertical Text
– This setting controls text orientation as the text is
typed on the screen. While horizontal text will be the normal default (shown in the example),
vertical text is sometimes used for certain signage and control panel layouts. Try each
option and you will quickly see how this works.
Horizontal Justification & Compression Options
– The first three icons in
this group are self-explanatory and control the justification of the text in the paragraph. This
works differently for Free text compared to Frame text.
When entering Free text, the justification option controls how the text is arranged around the
anchor point (the point on the screen where to click to begin typing). The text will be either
left justified, centered, or right justified around the point on the screen where you clicked the
mouse to begin typing. The Horizontal Compression icon will be grayed out and not be
available when Free text is being used.
When Frame text is used, the justification options control how the text is located within the
frame. The text will be left justified (against the left margin), centered within the frame, or
right justified (against the right margin), depending on the current selection.
You can change the justification option after typing, but I have found it best to select all the
