Troubleshooting
Overview
This chapter is by no means all-inclusive of everything that could cause your DSP not to operate as you expected,
but it is a guide to help you solve the most common problems that occur.
Although the DSP is a complex piece of equipment, we’ve found that most troubleshooting problems are directly
attributable to five, simple sources:
♦
Insufficient power supply
♦
Incorrect or improperly wired connections
♦
Incorrect tuning procedure
♦
Command unfamiliarization (that is, you didn’t read the manual!)
♦
Software incongruities
Because there are scores of different software and hardware configurations available to use with the DSP-232, it’s
impossible to list all the solutions to the software/hardware-related problems you may encounter, but this
Troubleshooting section should help you out of common problem situations.
A Troubleshooting Primer
The whole trick to troubleshooting is playing detective: you’re job is to determine the cause of the problem by
eliminating what can—or can’t—be the culprit. By using your head, you’ll succeed 99% of the time.
The first step is to break down the main components in your system into subsystems. They are:
Power supply
Power supply cable
DSP-232
Cable from DSP to computer
Computer/Software
Cable from DSP to radio
Radio
If you have an idea which sub-system might be the culprit, try to substituting it with a known good one. If your
system works okay after the substitution is in place then you’ve found the culprit component.
If, after checking all the sub-systems and performing the loop-back test for proper operation, your DSP still fails to
perform then you should either
RESET
,
RESTART
or
REINIT
the TNC. (Read about each command for more
information about their function and effect.)
