Chapter 8 ASCII and Baudot Operation
Changing Speed
Assume you’ve been receiving at 45 bauds and want to increase the baud rate in steps. From the Command mode,
enter:
RB
U
. The DSP will respond with:
RBaud was 45
RBaud now 50
RBAUD
sets the Baudot RTTY speed. The most common speed is 45 bauds on HF, but other speeds—including
commercial speeds—are supported. See
RBAUD
for all the supported speeds.
Since Baudot RTTY at 45 baud is somewhat slow, some users like to know exactly when the characters are actually
being sent. With
EAS
ON
, characters will echo on your display as they’re sent over the air.
For MARS Operators
MARS operators have some special requirements for RTTY operation and displaying text. To accommodate these
requirements, use
CRADD
and
MARSDISP
and the control characters above.
WIDESHIFT
Most commercial stations operate with a wide FSK shift of either 425 or 850 Hz. To receive these stations, set
WIDESHFT
ON
. With the proper license, you can also transmit to these stations, but remember to set
WIDESHFT
ON
.
The
CODE
Command for International RTTY Compatibility
CODE
enables the DSP to receive—and sometimes send—other RTTY character sets. Part 97.69 of the FCC rules
specifies that the International Telegraph Alphabet Number 2 (ITA #2) must be used by U.S. stations when
operating Baudot RTTY. This corresponds to the
CODE
0
command (default), but you may want to see the
CODE
command for more information.

permits packet and ASCII transmission of 8-bit data in Converse mode. When

, the
high-order bit (bit 7) of characters received from the terminal is set to 0 (zero) before the characters are transmitted.
