Chapter 7 Maildrop Operation
However, once you’re finished using your Maildrop—by entering
B
for
B
ye—your Maildrop will be available to
other stations.
When users connect to your Maildrop in packet, they’ll automatically connect to channel 9.
Before proceeding with the rest of this chapter, review the following commands that are directly applicable to using
the Maildrop:
3RDPARTY
,
HOMEBBS
,
KILONFWD
,
LASTMSG
,
MAILDROP
,
MDCHECK
,
MDMON
,
MMSG
,
MTEXT
,
MYMAIL
,
TMAIL
,
TMPROMPT.
A list and explaination of all Maildrop commands can be
found at the end of this chapter.
Expanding Your Maildrop
The DSP-232 comes standard with 18K of battery backed Maildrop space. If you find that your MailDrop fills to
quickly and you need more space, you can increase the Maildrop size to up to 256K. The chips necessary are
available through AEA directly. See Appendix D of this manual for more information.
Setting Up Your Maildrop
Set
MAILDROP
ON
to enable packet Maildrop operation;
TMAIL
ON
to start AMTOR or PACTOR Maildrop
operation. (Remember to turn
TMAIL
OFF
to have a normal ARQ conversation with other stations in the AMTOR
and PACTOR modes.)
When operating in packet, your Maildrop can have its own callsign which you enter in
MYMAIL
. Common practice
is to add an SSID after your callsign for this purpose, usually -1. If you don’t enter a callsign in
MYMAIL
, the
Maildrop will use your callsign that you entered for
MYCALL
and all incoming connections will connect
automatically to the Maildrop. When operating the Maildrop in AMTOR, your 4-character
MYSELCAL
or
7-character
MYIDENT
is used and
must
be entered by the other station to access your Maildrop while in that mode.
PACTOR uses MYPTCALL as usual.
By the way, you have full control of your DSP while your Maildrop is on. In Packet you can connect to, and chat
with, other stations while someone is using your Maildrop
provided the user has connected to the call you entered
in
MYMAIL
.
It’s a good idea enter a
CTEXT
message that says that if you’re not present to respond in person that the user should
re-connect to your Maildrop through your
MYMAIL
callsign. An example would be:
cmd
:
CTEXT
Hi! I’m not available right now, so please reconnect to WF7A-1 to
leave a message in my Maildrop. ‘73...Rich.
CText was
CText now Hi! I’m not available right now, so please
reconnect to WF7A-1 to leave a message in my Maildrop.
‘73...Rich.
Accessing and Commanding Your Maildrop
Your MailDrop mustn’t be connected or linked to any other station when you access your own Maildrop. To check
that you’re “clear”, enter
MDCHECK
. If someone is connected to your MailDrop, you’ll get the message:
?already connected
. If you’re clear, you’ll see:
