Chapter 13 Troubleshooting
your radio. Remember,
if there is a discrepancy between your radio’s mike (or accessory port) connections and the
ones listed in Appendix A, call AEA or your radio’s manufacturer for assistance
.
Radio
If the DSP passes the loop-back test (
Chapter 3 - Radio Installation
) and you’re absolutely sure that you wired the
mike connector correctly , then you probably have your radio set in the wrong mode for operation, or if it’s an older
model radio, you need to set the DSPs timing parameters to compensate for slow key-up times and such.
The only specific radio problems we’re familiar with are with some of the Kenwood HF models:
Kenwood TS-440S: Problems exist when hooking up the DSP to the TS-440S’ accessory jack—the radio won't
operate at full power whereas when you use the mic jack there's no problem; the problem has to do with
preamplification of the audio signal. To compound the problem, each TS-440S seems be different: some have no
problem at all and others do, so a generic fix for this problem isn’t easy. We suggest you try removing R151 (for
Radio Port 1) and/or R152 (for Radio Port 2) in the DSP, and if necessary, place a jumper across R160 to boost the
output the DSPs output.
Kenwood TS-450/850/950: All three of these models suffer from RFI problems when hooking up the DSP to the
mic connector, so we strongly suggest using their ACC ports. In
Appendix A
are special pinout diagrams for these
models.
It's also recommended that if you use the ACC ports on the 440 and 940 radios, that a separate ground wire be run
from the radio's ground lug to one of the screws that fasten the motherboard to the chassis inside the DSP.)
In Case You Need to Call for Help…
. . . call our Customer Service/Technical Support line at (206) 775-7373 between 8:00-4:30 Pacific time, weekdays.
Please have your DSP’s serial number and firmware version date available. (The version date is listed the first
screen that comes up when you turn on the DSP.) We’ll also need to know the nature of any other equipment that’s
connected to the DSP.
When you call, please have your DSP up and running beside the phone, if possible. Our technician(s) will likely ask
you to perform certain keyboard routines to aid in diagnosis of the problem. Try to have a voltmeter handy, too.
AEA also provides technical assistance by way of fax (206-775-2340) and your personal computer through
CompuServe’s
HamNet
.
If you’re already a CompuServe subscriber, enter GO HAMNET and leave mail for
us there in Section 13, or send your e-mail directly to our account (76702,1013).
Many of the products that are sent to us for repair are in perfect working order when we receive them. For these
units, there is a check-out fee which we’ll charge you. Please perform whatever steps are applicable from the
installation sections of this manual before you call or write—you’ll only add to the cost of your phone call if you
don’t! And please...
DON’T
return your DSP to us without contacting us first: we’d like to help you troubleshoot the
problem over the phone (or by mail) first, saving you both time and money.
If you’re instructed by one of our techs to return your unit to us, write the RMA number issued to you on the outside
of the shipping carton—it will speed the processing of your unit so it can be returned to you as soon as possible.
Inside the carton, enclose a note with your name, address, daytime phone number, RMA number, and a description
of your DSPs problem.
If you send us the DSP by UPS it must be sent to our street address,
not
the post office box number. Our street
address is:
