Chapter 9 AMTOR Operation
1. Enter
FEC
. You’re in the Converse mode and your transmitter is now keyed, so anything you type will be
sent.
2. Type in your CQ message. Make sure you include your callsign, and four- and seven-character SELCALL.
An example is shown below:
CQ CQ CQ DE KB6IUX -- KIUX -- KBDIUXX +?
(
CTRL-D
)
By tacking on a
CTRL+D
at the end of your CQ (or other text), it puts your radio into
AMTOR STBY
RCVE
mode after your CQ (or text) is sent; now it’ll be ready to receive a connect from another station.
Note
: while in STBY RCVE mode you won’t be able to monitor any text that the DSP hears—only in
ALIST
or
AM
mode can you monitor other linked and unlinked AMTOR stations.
3. After the DSP has sent your CQ, wait a bit for a response. If you don’t get one, repeat Step 2 or listen on
another frequency for other AMTOR stations.
Answering Another Station’s CQ
Normally, when you see a station calling CQ in FEC AMTOR, you’ll want to answer him using ARQ AMTOR.
Let’s assume you hear KG6ZL calling CQ using either his four-character (KGZL) or seven-character (KCDZFFF)
SELCALL . To answer him, enter one of the following:
ARQ KGZL
or..
ARQ KCDZFFF
Note
: you’ll get an error message if you try to connect to a station’s callsign—
you have to connect to its
SELCALL
.
If your station doesn’t link within a period of time determined by
ARQTMO
, your station will “give up” and
automatically stop transmitting.
Beginning a QSO
After you “connect” with the other station, what do you say or do? You might say something like:
DE
(
your call
)
Howdy! Name here is
(
you
)
and my QTH is
(
location
)
. You’re coming in
(
signal
information
)
here. +?
The
+?
at the end of your transmission changes control of the link back to the other station; when he’s done with his
transmission, he’ll do the same...and this is how the conversation goes, changing control of the link back and forth
until your QSO is finished.
Ending a QSO
The station that has control of the link is the one that normally ends the conversation. If you have control of the link,
you might end it like this:
Thanks again, and see ya later! DE KB6IUX -- KIUX -- KBDIUXXSK
(
CTRL+D
)
*** DISCONNECTED:
(
callsign
)
Entering (
CTRL-D
)
breaks the contact and puts you in back into
AMtor STBY RCVE
mode. From here, you can
go ahead and initiate a contact with another station or wait for a station to connect to you. Remember, though, that
you won’t be able to monitor other stations’ AMTOR transmissions unless you enter
AM or ATL, for unlinked and
linked stations, respectively
.
Seizing the Link
If the other station has the link and is sending a message to you, but you have to interrupt to tell him something—
like you might in Morse QSK (quick break-in.)—you can do that in AMTOR by entering
(
CTRL-C
)
ACHG
(
RETURN
)
(
text
)
. The
(
CTRL-C
)
ACHG
(
RETURN
)
commands cause the link to come back under your control
and puts the other station in receive. The text is optional; after you type it in, you can hand back control of the link
to the other station by entering a
+?
.
