Chapter 12     PACTOR Operation

With your DSP, it’s possible to listen to, or join, a roundtable discussion where two or more hams get together on
the same frequency to chat. To listen to stations that aren’t linked, enter

PTL

.

Note

: Because PACTOR-Listen mode doesn’t provide for error-correction, you may miss copying some

 frames.

If you want to transmit as part of a roundtable, all you have to do to participate is:

1. Turn

PTROUND

ON

2. Enter

PTSEND

to key your transmitter; You’re now in the CONVERSE mode, so anything you type will

be broadcast by your transmitter.

3.  When you’ve finished typing in your message, enter (

CTRL-D

). Because

PTROUND

 is

ON

, this will put

you back into the

PTLIST RCVE

mode, so you’ll be able to copy the other station(s).

4.  Go to Step 2 when you want to transmit again.

Calling CQ

When you call CQ, you must do so in the unproto PACTOR mode. Follow these steps to put your DSP and
transceiver into the transmit mode.

1. Enter

PTSEND

: you’re now transmitting in the

CONVERSE

mode, so anything you type will now will

be sent “unproto.”

2.  Type in your CQ message. (Make sure you include your callsign) or text. An example is shown below:

CQ CQ CQ DE WF7A WF7A WF7A  K

(

CTRL+D)

By tacking on a (

CTRL-D)

at the end of your CQ (or other text), it puts your radio into

PACTOR STBY

RCVE

mode after your CQ (or text)  is sent; now it’ll be ready to receive a connect from another station.

Note

: while in STBY RCVE mode you won’t be able to monitor other packets that the DSP hears; Only in

PTL mode can you monitor other PACTOR stations.

3.  After the DSP has sent your CQ, wait a bit for a response. If you don’t get one, repeat Step 2 or listen on

another frequency for other PACTOR stations.

4.  If you do get a response, you’ll get a

CONNECTED to (callsign)

 message. You’re now linked!

Answering Another Station’s CQ

While in PTL, if you want to answer another station’s CQ enter:

PTC

call

. If you successfully link, you’ll get the

*** CONNECTED to (callsign)

message and you’ll have control of the link. You might send something to

acknowledge this, like:

(Other station’s callsign) DE (your callsign).  I’m (your name) and I’m
in (your location). You’re coming in (signal report).>

If your station doesn’t link within a period of time determined by

ARQTMO

, your station will “give up” and

automatically stop transmitting.

Beginning a QSO

The station that connected to you above now has the link and might send a message like:

DE KB6IUX  Howdy! Name here is Monroe and my QTH is Bisbee, AZ. You’re
coming in gangbusters here!  K

Your contact typed a his marker—the “K”— to let you know he’s finished this transmission and is turning control
of the link over to you. (You’ll know when he’s done so by looking at the DSPs indicator lights: the SEND, IDLE,
and ARQ lights will glow.) Now go ahead and type a reply:

DE WF7A.  Great, Monroe--you’re 5x5 here, too.  I’m Richard and I live on Vashon Island, WA.
You’re my first PACTOR contact!> (CTRL+Z)*

*(CTRL+Z) is similar in function as

+?

 in AMTOR.
