Introduction
About this chapter
This chapter provides removal and replacement
instructions for component parts of the server unit.
Parts replacement policy
Generally, a ‘board replacement’ policy is implemented on
the server unit. The service engineer will not normally be
expected to change board components. The information
and instructions given in this manual reflect this policy.
For replacement tasks outside of the scope of this manual,
return the server to your Sony representative for repair.
What are hot-swappable parts?
Key parts of the server are ‘hot-swappable’ and designed
to be replaced while ac power is applied to the server unit:
• Power Supply Modules
• Media RAID HDDs
• System Fans.
In order to be ‘hot-swappable’, redundant parts are built-in
to ensure that the server continues to function normally
when a fault occurs on any single module, HDD or fan.
This also enables replacement of the faulty part without
interrupting the operation of the server.

What is powered-off replacement?
Parts of the server that are not hot-swappable require the
power to be turned off in order to be replaced.
See “Powered-off replacement parts” on page 87 for
instructions.
Safety precautions
Danger of electric shock - high voltages exist within this
equipment. Only an approved and qualified service
engineer is permitted to remove the covers of this
equipment. Failure to comply may result in death or
serious injury.
Only qualified service engineers are permitted to remove
the covers of this equipment. Always use safe working
practices and observe all safety precautions when
replacing parts

Tools required
The following tools are required to replace parts the server:
• Screwdriver, Phillips #1.
• Screwdriver, Phillips #2.
• Screwdriver, long flat-blade #2.
• Screwdriver, long precision flat-blade 2 mm.
• Electrostatic discharge mat.
• Grounding wrist or foot strap.
The last two items help protect the server against damage
due to electrostatic discharge. For more information, see
“Electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions” on page 42 .
Returning parts to Sony
Please use adequate packaging when returning parts to
your local Sony representative. Sony cannot be held liable
for goods damaged in transit, see
“Transportation and
packaging” on page 48 .
