Troubleshooting
Introduction
About this manual
This chapter provides troubleshooting information and
procedures for service engineers. Possible problems and
fault symptoms are listed here along with suggested
corrective action that may be taken to rectify the problem.
This chapter is organised into the following topics:
• Error messages
• Power supply problems
• Audible alarms
• Communication problems
• RAID problems
• Miscellaneous problems
Servicing policy
High voltage is present within this equipment. Only
trained and approved service engineers may remove
the cover of this equipment. Failure to comply may
result in death or injury.
Electronic circuits within this equipment may be
damaged by ElectroStatic discharge (ESD). Always
ensure correct ESD techniques and procedure are used
when handling electronic circuits.
Generally, a ‘board replacement’ policy is implemented on
the server unit. The service engineer will not normally be
expected to change board components. The information
and instructions given in this manual reflect this policy.
Initial checks
Confirm the fault symptom
Before using this chapter to troubleshoot a reported fault
symptom, it is advisable to confirm the existence of the
reported fault and to use the troubleshoot information in
the
HDXS-C200
Installation Manual
to verify that the fault
is not due to operator error and cannot be easily rectified.
When this user-level troubleshooting has been exhausted,
proceed to the relevant service-level troubleshooting
section contained in this chapter.
Check for recent changes to the system
Depending on the nature of the fault, it may helpful when
troubleshooting to find out if there have been any recent
changes or alterations to the system which may have been
made. For example, the addition of a workstation which
has not been configured correctly for the network, or a
change to a setting which was not considered to have an
impact at the time, but may now be the cause of a new
problem.
Troubleshooting overview
The service engineer’s function is to:
1
Identify faults as server hardware, external hardware,
or software.
2
Isolate faults within the HDXchange server and decide
if a part needs replacement.
3
Provide guidance on 'next steps' should local repair not
be possible.
