POST audible ‘beep’ codes
Audible ‘beeps’ are used to communicate error conditions
during the POST, prior to system video initialization.
POST diagnostic LEDs
The rear panel POST diagnostic LEDs indicate the status
of the unit at boot-up (see
for
a description of the LEDs and how to read the codes).
During the system boot process, the BIOS executes a
number of platform configuration processes, each of
which is assigned a specific hexadecimal POST code
number. As each configuration routine is started, the BIOS
displays the POST code via the rear panel diagnostic
LEDs.
In the event that the system stops/hangs during the POST
process, the diagnostic LEDs will identify the last process
to be executed. This information may be used to identify
and repair the fault. If the nature of the fault cannot be
identified or repaired, report the relevant error code back
to your Sony representative.
A list of POST error codes is given in the table below
(O = off, A = Amber, R = Red, G = Green).

Memory
problem
Re-seat Memory modules or
replace with known-good
modules.
4-7, 9-11 Motherboard
problem
Fatal error indicating a serious
problem with the system.
Before declaring the
Motherboard faulty, eliminate the
possibility of interference by a
faulty add-in card. Remove all
expansion cards.
If the beep codes are generated
even when all other expansion
cards are absent, the
Motherboard has a serious
problem. Return to your Sony
representative for repair.
If the beep codes are not
generated when all expansion
cards are absent, one of the
cards is probably causing the
malfunction. Insert the cards
back into the system one at a
time until the problem occurs
again. This will reveal the faulty
card.
