POST Diagnostic LEDs
During the Power On Self Test (POST) the four tri-colour
LEDs will change colour, displaying the currently active
test. When the server has completed its POST successfully
the LEDs are turned off. Should the server ‘hang’ during
any test the LEDs will display the point at which failure
has occurred.
The four LEDs are used to display an 8-bit word utilising
the colours available to the tri-colour LEDs. Each LED is
comprised of an in-built red and green source. When both
sources are lit, amber is displayed.
The four red LED sources represent the upper nibble of the
code word, and the four green LED sources represent the
lower nibble. If the LED is amber this means that the
corresponding bit of both the upper and lower nibble is set.
In the example below, the code word displayed is ‘AC’ (in
hexadecimal), or 10101100 (in binary).
See
Chapter 8, Troubleshooting
for a list of error codes
and their meanings.
Status LED
This bi-colour LED indicates the status of the server.
CMOS Battery
A lithium CMOS Battery ensures that the on-board CMOS
chip stores the system configuration (e.g., hard disk type,
floppy drive types, date and time, and the order in which
the computer will look for bootable disks) when the server
is turned off.
When the battery starts to degrade, the clock values will be
incorrect and system configuration will be affected.
Ensure that the CMOS battery is replaced before a problem
occurs, see
“5-yearly maintenance” on page 97
M
DIMM C2 fault LED (amber). Normally off.
O
DIMM D1 fault LED (amber). Normally off.
P
DIMM D2 fault LED (amber). Normally off.
Q
+5 Volt standby LED (green). Lit when AC
power is applied to the system. If there is no
power or the motherboard is at fault, the LED
will be off.
R
Processor 2 fault LED (amber). Normally off.
S
Processor 1 fault LED (amber). Normally off.
T
Processor 2 fault LED (amber). This LED
applies only to server systems that use an
active heatsink. This LED indicates a fault has
occurred with fan that is installed on the
heatsink for processor 2.
U
Processor 1 fault LED (amber). This LED
applies only to server systems that use an
active heatsink. This LED indicates a fault has
occurred with fan that is installed on the
heatsink for processor 1.
