Secondly, pruning is also important to give a good orientation to the main
branches, so that they will not obstruct the umbrella of the harvester when it
folds/unfolds. The arms of the umbrella pivot at a height of about 1,70 m, occupying
all the volume included in the area of the radius of the umbrella multiplied by the
height of its arms.
This is one of the reasons why narrow frameworks are problematic: It is not
only more difficult to manoeuvre, but also more difficult (or even impossible) to
folf/unfold the umbrella. The following drawing will help you to understand it:
Pruning trees is important to
direct how their main branches will
grow. They have to be directed to grow
as vertically as possible in order to
prevent them from being an obstacle
for the arms of the umbrella when it is
folding/unfolding.
On the next photo, we try to
ilustrate and explain why you have to
let a free area of 1,70 metre high
(height of the arms of a Ø 6,5-m
umbrella) or 1,50 metre high (height of
the arms of a Ø 6-m umbrella).
