Mode of operation
3.3.1
Mode of operation overview
The positioner is a field device with a microcontroller. The positioner adjusts and controls
pneumatic actuators. The positioner works on a electropneumatic basis.
The setpoint and actual value of the actuator position are electronically compared in a
microcontroller. If the microcontroller detects a deviation, it uses its control algorithm to
actuate the pneumatic block inside the positioner.
Air is blown into the chamber or chambers of the pneumatic actuator, or removed in the
opposite direction. The pneumatic block inside the positioner doses this air flow.
The linear or part-turn movements are detected by non-contacting sensors.

Local operation
Using the four buttons, you can parameterize and operate the positioner, as well as change
between automatic and manual mode. On the display, you can follow the positioner's
settings and feedback. In manual mode the actuator can be adjusted over the entire range.

Operator control and monitoring with the SIMATIC PDM configuration software
Use the SIMATIC PDM configuration software for convenient operation, monitoring,
configuration and parameterization of the device. You can read out any available diagnostic
information from the device with SIMATIC PDM. The communication is handled with the
HART protocol. The access to the device for the HART protocol can take place via a HART
modem as well as a HART capable input/output module (Remote IO). Different (Enhanced)
EDDs are available for HART communication.
SITRANS DTM is a software based on the proven EDD technology. Use this software with
an FDT frame application (e.g. PACTware) to set the parameters of field devices using a
DTM (Device Type Manager). SITRANS DTM and the necessary, device-specific Enhanced
EDDs are available for free download.
