KRYPTON™
ENHANCED CRYPTOCARD
This crypto card is a PCMCIA format device. The crypto cards used in the STE operational environment
are available from the Central Facility and are programmed for specific security levels and users. They
contain a Cryptographic Ignition Key (CIK) which is the mechanism used to unlock the secure
functionality of a cryptographic device, in this case the STE. Conceptually, a CIK can be viewed as a \key
to a lock. Once installed in a STE, the cards can be electronically re-keyed. Re-keying is addressed in
Paragraph
. Establishing the CIK on the Crypto Card can only be made at the Central Facility.
NOTE
All FORTEZZA PLUS
KRYPTON™
ENHANCED CRYPTOCARDS are battery
operated, each manufactured with an internal non-rechargeable and non-
replaceable battery. These batteries have an expected life of approximately 5 to 7
years. Also, there are neither program nor visible indications that the battery is
failing. Thus, any problem with the card’s power supply (battery) may become
apparent only though errors when the card is installed in the STE.

Crypto Card States and Functions
The FORTEZZA PLUS
KRYPTON™
ENHANCED CRYPTOCARD can be in either one of two primary states,
“Fill” or “User” and two possible states “STE not capable” and “STE capable”:
1.
Fill
– Card contains the operational, test or seed crypto keys and both the “A” and “B” splits. See
Paragraph
2.
User
– Card contains operational, test or seed crypto keys and only the “A” split, and is
associated with a STE. See Paragraph
3.
STE Not Capable
- STEs can electronically use the card, but cannot log on to the card. This
may be for any number of reasons, including that the card may not be a CryptoCard.
4.
STE Capable
– a User Card with the association removed via the Crypto Card Management
(CCM) function: Remove Crypto Card (Paragraph
). The card is usable as a TPA, as well
