REMOTE CONTROL OPERATIONS

8-1. General Information - Remote Control Operations

Remote Control refers to the ability to control the STE from a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) device
connected to the STE’s Red Serial Data Port. All STEs have a powerful and easy to use data
communications capability compatible with most PCs and other serial devices available today. However,
some Manufacturers do not provide a direct EIA-232 or EIA-530A interface. Interfacing with some
devices may require special cables, adapter units, and attention to detail. Refer to

installation details.
Prior to any Remote Control data or voice operation, the TPA (Terminal Privilege Authority) must make all
settings associated with data or voice operations as discussed in

. For data communications,

these include enabling Remote Control with either Remote Authentication or Secure Data Access Control
List (or both) enabled, setting Secure Data Application and the Secure Data Security Levels. For voice
communications (using the CEU, STE-R, STE-RI, or STE-RT), the TPA must also set Secure Voice
Application and the Secure Voice Security Levels. It should be noted that the STE-R acts as though
Remote Authentication is enabled.
When TPA settings have been completed, you can set Terminal Control to “Terminal Under Host Port
Control” (remote control), enable Auto_Answer, and set the Rings Before Auto_Answer value.

Modes

Table 8-1

shows you which data modes are achievable by the STE on each network type. All STE

terminals are interoperable with each other in all modes. Please see the NOTES section (following Table
8-1) for information related to the data in the parenthesis in this table.
