STEP 2: Determine Switch Type and Software Version.
The STE is compatible with the protocols used by the following switches and associated PBX (Private
Branch Exchanges).
•
NI-1/NI-2 National Standard (best compatibility with STE)
•
Lucent 5ESS Version 10 or greater
•
Northern Telecom DMS-100
•
Lucent Definity (WCBRI or 8510T terminal types)
•
Siemens EWSD or EWSDE (Euro Version)
•
REDCOM
•
Meridian (Release 24B)
•
Madge 20, 60 and 200
•
SL-100
Enter the Switch Type in
STEP 3: Determine Switch Feature Codes for:
•
Conference Feature
•
Transfer Feature
•
Drop Feature
Enter the Codes in
STEP 4: Determine Service Profile Identifiers and Directory Numbers.
The switch uses Service Profile Identifiers (SPIDs) and Directory Numbers (DNs) as unique identification
numbers for each ISDN line so it can determine where to send calls.
The SPID identifies the available service options. There may be one or two SPIDs depending upon the
Switch Type and Switch Line Setting. A SPID may be up to 20 numbers long. Two SPIDs are required
for bonding (sharing channels for greater bandwidth).
The DN is your telephone number. There may be one or two DNs depending upon the Switch Type and
Switch Line Setting.
Examples of SPIDs and DNs formats are:
•
SPID: 01-555-5555-000
•
DN: 410-555-5555
NOTE
Formats for SPIDs and DNs vary among local service providers.
Enter the SPIDs and DNs in
STEP 5: Determine the ISDN Interface from the service provider.
If the ISDN service comes directly from a Telephone Company CO (Central Office) switch then it probably
is a 2-wire U-interface. However, if your service comes from a local ISDN capable PBX, you may get a 4-
wire S/T-interface. This is preferred since the STE is an S/T-interface device.
Enter the interface type in
STEP 6: Determine if a Network Termination Device is required.
A Network Termination Device (NT-1) converts the 2-wire (U-interface) connection coming from the
Phone Company, into a 4-wire (S/T-interface) connection interface for ISDN terminal equipment. The NT-
