Lin es 11 0-1 8 0 allow you to input which of the dots are to be u sed in
a p a rti c ul a r column ' and then convert the dots into a numb er the
L X - 80 un de rstands . When you have finished a column, simpl y press
th e R E TURN key. Line 140 also makes sure that a row gr eater than
8 is not i nput . Also if one row is input more than once so th at the
val u e for t he column goes over 255, it keeps it at that v a lu e. This
correspo n ds to a full vertical line. The loop does not allocat e values
t o th e two c olumns at the right since they are left blank in o r der to
give spaces between the characters.
Line 190 ma kes sure that draft mode is set, since this m e th od of
d efi n i ng t h e characters only works in this mode.
Li n e 200 co pi e s the ROM character set into RAM so that i t can be
rede f i n ed.
Li n e 210 se t s the alternate character set .

Line 230 sets an attribute to use the top 8 pins of the he a d . I f you
wa n t t h e b o ttom 8 pins to be used make this 0 instead of 128 .

b e fired, w hich has been stored in the array.
L i n es 2 7 0-29 0 print the character out in normal pica and a l so in
e nl arged e mphasized pica .
Th e re m ai nd e r of the program shows you the values of th e nu mbers
i n t h e arrays .
Running the program
Fo r eac h of t he nine columns, the program will ask for th e numbers
of t h e rows in which you want dots to appear. Enter the r ow num -
bers one a t a time, pressing the RETURN key after each on e. When
yo u have e nt e red all the numbers for a column or when you want no
d o t s in a co lumn, press RETURN without a number . R e m ember
th a t t h e ver tical lines in the grid are the even-numbered co lu mns .
In o u r exa mple , the program first asks what rows have d ots in
c o lum n 1 . R e spond with 8, RETURN, and 2, RETURN t o in dicate
th a t yo u wa nt dots in rows 8 and 2 . Then press RETURN a l one to
i ndi ca t e th a t no more dots go in column 1 . For column 2 (the
ve rt ica l lin e ) enter 7, and 3, with a RETURN after each of t hem .
Th e n e n ter RETURN to finish with column 2 and go on t o column
3 .
