The LX-80 ca nnot only ch a ng e th e pitch - it has man y m ore ways
of varying an d enhancing printing . To a void your h a ving t o type in
dozens of prog r a ms to try a ll th e features , this chapter giv es you just
one master pr ogram th a t c a n demonstrate any feature .
Bold Modes
Besides the pi tch e s (pica , e lit e, and condensed) cover e d in Chapter
5, the LX-80 o ff e r s man y oth e r t y pe s tyl e s, including tw o for bold
printing-em ph as ized and doubl e - s trik e .
Em ph as i ze d mode
In the emphasize d mod e th e LX-80 prints each dot twic e, with the
second dot s li g htly to th e right of the first . In order to d o t h is, the
print head m u s t s low down so that it ha s time to fire , retract , and fire
the pins quic kl y e nough to produce the overlapping dot s. As you
can see in Fig ure 6-1 , thi s method produces better - lookin g, more
fully-for m ed c h a ract e rs that a r e darker than single-strik e o n es.
