E-3.3.2 EM-6983 Description
The EM-6983 Line Probe is a wire clamp-on device that attaches directly to equipment
power lines, in place of a LISN (line stabilization network), for measuring conducted emissions.
In addition, it is also useful for measuring the presence of conducted signals on power lines with-
in a facility. In this case, the probe can be attached directly to power lines within a distribution
panel or cabinet.
The EM-6983 Line Probe is constructed in accordance with FCC Rules and Regulations
Volume II, Part 15, Paragraph 8.4, Appendix A.
If a LISN is not available, the probe can be used to block the low frequency voltage on a
power line while allowing the high frequencies present on the line to be measured. The probe
presents a resistance of at least 1500 ohms to all voltages on the line. Since the probe attenuates
the noise voltage, a correction factor must be added to the receiver/analyzer readings in order to
obtain the correct noise levels present on the line.
E-3.3.3 EM-6983 Applications
The EM-6983 Line Probe is designed to meet the FCC specifications for a line probe used
in measuring conducted emissions from 450 kHz to 30 MHz. Its principal application is in test
situations where the line current is too great for the use of a LISN.
