Alarm mode for heart-lung machine (HLM)
During use of an Heart Lung Machine (HLM) the lung
ventilation leads to untypical CO
2
waveforms. Thus no
breathing phases will be detected based on the CO
2
signal. This causes apnea alarms.
Due to continuous blood flow during HLM surgery
the SpO
2
alarms of Julian are disabled in this mode.
All other alarms remain active.
In HLM alarm mode:
– all apnea alarms are disabled.
– PAW lower alarm limit disappears from the alarm limit
menu.
– gas concentrations are measured continuously
regardless of the respiratory phase.
– SpO
2
alarms are disabled. They are reactivated
automatically when pulsations are again detected by
the system after switching off HLM alarm mode.
The HLM mode of Julian is dependent on the alarm
system or functionality of the connected HLM machi-
ne and is not intended to replace any monitoring or
alarms of the HLM machine.
Selecting HLM alarm mode

Press »config« menu key.
●
Turn dial knob to select the column »alarms«,
press to confirm.
●
Turn dial knob to select the line »HLM on«,
press to confirm.
●
Display (example):
The lung is kept open with constant airway pressure.
HLM mode is deactivated automatically when entering
Standby.
HLM alarm mode can be switched off at any time:
●
Press »HLM off« menu key.
When leaving HLM mode:
– CO
2
apnea detection will be activated immediately
(no sleep mode function).
– SpO
2
measurement remains in sleep mode (alarms
are reactivated when pulsation is detected).
