N O T E :
In addition to packing the bearings, make
sure the lubricant reservoir at the end o f each
trunnion is com pletely filled w ith lubricant. In
filling these reservoirs, pack lubricant into th e hole
so as to fill fro m the b o tto m . This w ill prevent air
pockets and ensure an adequate supply o f lubricant.
T o replace tru n n io n dust seal, rem ove th e old dust seal and
place new seal on tru n n io n -c a v ity o f seal tow ard end o f
tru n n io n -P re s s seal o n to tru n n io n exercising ca u tio n during
installatio n to prevent seal d isto rtio n and to assure p ro p er
seating o f seal on trunnion.
b.
O n all o th e r universal jo in ts lubricate tru n n io n
bearing rollers.
c.
Insert tru n n io n in propeller shaft yoke and press
bearings into yoke and over tru n n io n hubs far
enough to install lock rings.
Installation
1. F o r m odels w ith one piece propeller shafts, slide shaft
in to transm ission and a tta c h rear U -joint to axle. T orque
b o lts to specifications.
N O T E :
This
propeller shaft to pinion flange
fastener is an im portant attaching part in th a t it
could affe ct the performance o f vital components
and systems, and/or could result in major repair
expense. It must be replaced w ith one o f the same
part num ber or w ith an equivalent part if replace
m ent becomes necessary. Do n ot use a replacement
part o f lesser q uality or substitute design. Torque
values must be used as specified during reassembly
to assure proper retention o f this part.
2. F o r m odels w ith tw o piece shafts, install fro n t h a lf in to
transm ission and bolt support to crossm em ber.
a.
Slide grease cap and gasket o n to rear splines.
b.
R o ta te shaft so front U -joint tru n n io n is in a vertical
position.
c.
Take rear propeller shaft and before installing align
U -joint trunnions in same vertical positio n as in step
b (a t this p o in t all U-joint tru n n io n s should be
vertical). (Fig. 29). T hen, note relationship o f fro n t
shaft and rear shaft spline position. R o ta te rear shaft
four splines tow ard left side o f vehicle (Fig. 29) and
install rear shaft to fro n t shaft. A tta c h rear U-joint
to axle. T ighten grease cap.
d.
T orque bearing su p p o rt to crossm em ber and U-joint
to axle attac h m e n ts to specifications.
