SPEEDOMETER D R IV E N GEAR REPLACEMENT
D isconnect speedom eter cable, remove lock plate to housing
b o lt and lock w asher and remove lock plate. Insert screw
driver in lock plate slot in fitting and pry fitting, gear and shaft
from housing. Pry “ 0 ” ring from groove in fitting.

Hold the assem bly so slot in fitting is tow ard lock plate boss
on housing and install in housing. Push fitting into housing
un til lock plate can be inserted in groove and attach ed to
housing.
TRANSM ISSION SIDE COVER
REPLACEM ENT/REPAIR (Fig. 10)
1. S hift transm ission into neutral d eten t positions. Remove
attaching bolts and shift levers from shifter shafts at side
cover.
2. D isconnect backing lamp and “T .C .S .” sw itch wiring at
switches.
3. Remove side cover bolts and rem ove cover assembly from
transm ission case and allow oil to drain from case.
4. Rem ove b o th shift forks from shifter shaft assemblies.
Remove b o th shifter shaft assemblies from cover. Seals in
cover may be pried o u t if replacem ent is required because
o f damage.
5. Remove d eten t cam spring and pivot retainer “ C ” ring.
Remove b o th d eten t cams.

. W ith d eten t spring tang projecting up over the 2nd and
3rd shifter shaft cover opening install th e first and reverse
d eten t cam o n to the d eten t cam pivot pin. With the
d eten t spring tang projecting up over the first and reverse
shifter shaft cover hole install th e 2nd and 3rd d eten t
cam.

7. Install d eten t cam retaining “ C ” ring to pivot shaft, and
ho o k spring into d eten t cam notches.

. Install b o th shifter shaft assemblies in cover being careful
n o t to dam age seals. Install b o th shift forks to shifter
shaft assemblies, lifting up on d eten t cam to allow forks
to fully seat into position.
9. Shift shifter levers into neutral d eten t (center) position
and slide cover into place making sure the shift forks are
aligned w ith th eir respective m ainshaft clutch sliding
sleeves.
10. Install cover attaching b o lts and tighten evenly to speci­
fied torque. Install TCS sw itch and connect wiring.
11. Install outer shifter levers. Tighten bolts to specifications.
12. Rem ove filler plug and add lubricant specified in Section
0
, to level o f filler plug hole.
