2. Install the relay rod to the idler arm and p itm an arm ball
studs, m aking certain th e seals are in place. Install and
torq u e the n u t and then install th e c o tte r pin (see
Specifications Section fo r specific instructions).
3. Install the tie rods to the relay ro d as previously d e
scribed under “ Tie R o d —In stallatio n .” L ubricate the tie
rod ends.
4 . Remove the vehicle fro m the hoist.
5. A djust toe-in (see S ection 3) and align steering w heel as
described previously in this section u nder Steer-Wheel
A lignm ent and High P o in t C entering.
Idler Arm
Removal
1. Place vehicle on a h o ist.
2. Rem ove th e co tter pin and castellated n u t from ball stud
at the relay ro d . Rem ove the ball stu d from th e relay rod
by tapping on the relay ro d boss w ith a ham m er, while
using a heavy ham m er as a backing (fig. 27).
3. Rem ove the idler arm to fram e bolt and rem ove the idler
arm assem bly.
Installation
1. P ostion the idler arm on th e fram e and install the
m o u n tin g bolts (special plain washers u nder b o lt heads);
to rq u e the n u ts to specifications.
2. Make sure th a t the threads on th e ball stu d and in the ball
stu d n u t are perfectly clean and sm ooth. C heck co ndition
o f ball stu d seal; replace if necessary.
N O T E :

3. Install the idler arm ball stu d in the relay ro d , m aking
certain the seal is p o sitioned pro p erly ; install the n u t and
c o tte r pin as outlined in the S pecifications section at the
rear o f this m anual.
4. Rem ove the vehicle from the hoist.
Pitman Arm
Removal
1. Place vehicle on a hoist.
2. Rem ove the c o tte r pin and castellated n u t from ball stu d
at the relay ro d . Rem ove the ball stu d from th e relay rod
by tapping o n th e relay rod boss w ith a h am m er, while
using a heavy ham m er as a backing (fig. 27).
3. Rem ove the pitm an arm to p itm an shaft n u t. Mark
relationship o f the arm to the shaft and th e n remove the
p itm an arm using Tool J-6632 or J-5504 (fig. 10).
Installation
1. Install the p itm an arm on the pitm an sh aft, lining up the
m arks m ade up o n rem oval. Install and torque the n ut.
2. Make sure th a t the th read s on the ball stud and in the ball
stud n u t are perfectly clean and sm o o th . Check condition
o f ball stud seal; replace if necessary.

4 . Rem ove the vehicle from the hoist.
Steering Arms
If, through collision or o th e r dam age, it becom es necessary
to rem ove and replace either steering arm , proceed as follows:
Removal
1. Place vehicle on hoist.
2. Rem ove tie rod from steering arm as o u tlin ed in this
section.
3. Rem ove fro n t w heel, h u b and brake drum as a unit by
rem oving hu b cap an d dust cap, c o tte r pin from spindle
n u t and th e spindle n u t. Pull assem bly tow ard outside o f
vehicle. If removal is difficult, it m ay be necessary to
back o f f brake ad ju stm en t to increase brake shoe-to-drum
clearan ce; see H ydraulic Brake A djustm ent, Sec. 5.
4 . With wheel and drum assem bly rem oved, steering arm
retaining bolt heads are accessible and rem oval o f steering
arm from vehicle m ay be accom plished by rem oving
retaining nuts.
Installation
1. Place steering arm in position on vehicle an d install
retaining bolts. N ote th a t longer bolt is installed in
forw ard hole.
2. Install n u ts and to rq u e to specifications.
3. Pack w heel bearings using a high quality w heel bearing
lubricant. Install bearings an d w heel-hub-brake drum
assem bly rem oved previously.
4. Install k eyed w asher and spindle n ut. Proceed as outlined
under ’‘F ro n t Wheel B e arin g s-A d ju st” in Section 3.
5. Install tie rod stud in steering arm . Be sure th a t th e dust
cover is in place on ball stud.
6
. Install castellated n u t on ball stud, tighten to specifica
tions and install c o tte r pin (see S pecifications S ection).
7. Rem ove vehicle from hoist.
8
. Follow ing directions given in Section 3 to check corner
ing w heel relationship and toe-in; correct as required.
