2. Install th e shaft assem bly in to the housing from th e
u p p e r end.
3. Install th e low er shaft to th e p o t jo in t coupling clam p.
I n s t a l l th e coupling clam p bolt and to rq u e to
specifications.
N O T E : The coupling b olt must pass through the
shaft undercut.
4. A ssem ble th e bearing housing as follow s:
a. Press th e new u p p er and low er bearing races into
th e bearing housing.
b . L ubricate and install the bearings into th e bearing
races.
c. Place th e lock shoe springs in position in th e
housing. Install each shoe in place and com press th e
spring until a suitable size straight punch can be
used to h o ld the shoe in positio n (it m ay be
necessary to acquire assistance to install th e shoes.
O nce th e shoes are in place, drive in th e shoe
retaining pin.
d. Install the shoe release lever and drive in th e pivot
pin.
e. Install th e tilt release lever.
f. L ubricate th e shoes and release lever.
5. Install th e bearing housing assem bly to th e su p p o rt. H old
th e tilt release lever in th e “ u p ” positio n u n til th e shoes
have fully engaged th e su p p o rt. L ubricate and install th e
bearing housing pivot pins. Press th e pins in flush w ith
th e housing.

. Place th e housing in th e full “ u p ” position and th e n
install tilt spring and retain er (tap e re d end o f spring
first). P ush in to th e housing approxim ately 3 /1 6 ” and
ro ta te co u n ter clockwise

7. L ubricate and install th e upper bearing race, race seat and
lo ck n u t. T ighten th e lo c k n u t (using Socket J-2 2 5 9 9 ) to
rem ove th e lash and th e n carefully fu rth e r tig h ten 1/16
to
1/8
o f a tu rn (colum n m ust be in straight ahead
position).

. Rem ove th e tilt release lever.
9. Install th e directional signal switch.
10. Column Shift Models — Install th e shift lever and pivot
pin.
11. Install th e steering w heel as outlined on Page 9 4 .
12. C heck electrical and m echanical functioning o f colum n.
N O T E : Torque values must be used as specified
during reassembly, see the Specification Section.
P rocedure below to be follow ed if th e colum n is to be
rem oved from th e vehicle.
Disassembly—Tilt Column (Fig. 14)
1. Place the colum n in a b en c h vise using H olding F ixtures
J-22573 (fig. 15).
C A U T IO N : Clamping the column directly in a vise,
could result in a damaged colum n.
2. Rem ove th e directional signal sw itch as o u tlin ed under
“ D irectional Signal Sw itch-R em oval” .
3. Rem ove th e low er steering shaft and p o t jo in t assembly
an d low er bearing and ad ap ter assem bly as outlined
u n d er “ L ow er Bearing an d A dapter-R em oval” .
