(fig. 20). Rem ove th e th ru st washer.
12. Rem ove th e neutral-safety o r back-up lam p sw itch screws
and rem ove th e sw itch.

14. Rem ove th e shift tu b e assem bly using T ool J-22551 (fig.
22). Insert th e h o o k ed en d o f th e to o l in to th e n o tc h in
th e shift tu b e ju s t below th e shift lever housing key. P ilot
the sleeve over the th read ed end o f th e to o l and in to th e
\-j
u p p er end o f the shift tu b e . F orce the shift tu b e o u t o f
the housing b y turn in g the n u t o n to the tool. If th e shift
tu b e is n o t com pletely free w hen th e n u t is b o tto m e d on
18,
th e threads, com plete th e rem oval b y hand.

C A U T IO N : Do N o t hammer or pull on the shift
tube during removal. On column shift models, guide
the lower shift lever through the slotted opening in
the column to prevent damage to the tube or
column.
Remove th e lock plate by sliding out o f th e colum n
notches, tipping th e plate dow nw ard tow ard the housing
(to com press th e wave w asher) and th e n rem oving as
show n in Figure 23. Rem ove th e wave washer.
Rem ove th e shift lever housing.
Column Shift Models - Rem ove th e shift lever spring by
w inding th e spring up w ith pliers.
If necessary, rem ove the dash panel seal, m ounting plate
and th e in stru m e n t panel seal from th e colum n jack et.
