Removal
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. L oosen check n u ts a t forw ard end o f parking brake
equalizer sufficiently to rem ove all tension from brake
cable.
3. Rem ove brake drum s.
C A U T IO N : The brake pedal must not be depressed
while drums are removed.
4. U n h o o k brake shoe pull back springs from anchor pin
and link en d , using Tool J-8049 (Fig. 23).
5. Rem ove the a c tu a to r re tu rn spring.

. Disengage the link end from th e anchor pin and then
from the secondary shoe.
7. Rem ove hold-dow n pins and springs using any suitable
tool (Fig. 24).

. Rem ove th e ac tu a to r assem bly.
N O T E : The actuator, pivot and override spring are
an assembly. I t is not recommended th at they be

disassembled fo r service purposes, unless they are
broken. It is much easier to assemble and disas­
semble the brakes by leaving them intact.
9. Separate the brake shoes by rem oving adjusting screw
and spring.
C A U T IO N : M ark shoe and lining positions if they
are to be reinstalled.
10. Rem ove parking brake lever from secondary brake shoe.
Inspection
1. Clean dirt o u t o f brake drum . Inspect drum s for rough­
ness, scoring or o u t o f ro u n d . Replace or recondition
drum s as necessary.
2. C arefully pull low er edges o f wheel cylinder b o o ts away
from cylinders an d n o te w hether interior is w et w ith
brake fluid. Excessive fluid at this point indicates leakage
past piston cups requiring overhaul o f w heel cylinder.
