A xle Shaft
O ne o f the cardinal p o in ts o f axle noise diagnosis is the fact
th a t all rear axles are noisy to a certain degree. The action o f
transm itting the high engine torque through a 90° turn
reducing propeller shaft speed produces noise in rear axles.
This p o in t establishes th e need for a line betw een norm al and
abnorm al or unacceptable axle noises.
Slight axle noise heard only at a certain speed or under
rem ote co n d itio n s m ust be considered norm al. Axle noise
tends to “ p e a k ” at varying speeds and th e noise is in no way
indicative o f tro u b le in the axle.
If noise is present in an objectionable form , loud or at all
speeds, an effo rt should be m ade to isolate th e noise as being
in one particular u n it o f th e vehicle. Axle noise is often
confused w ith other noises such as tire noise, transm ission
noise, propeller shaft vibration and universal jo in t noise.
Isolation o f th e noise as in any one u n it requires skill and
experience. An a tte m p t to elim inate a slight noise m ay baffle
even th e best o f diagnosticians. Such practice as raising tire
pressure to elim inate tire noise, listening for th e noise at
varying speeds and on drive, float and coast, and u nder proper
