STEERING LIN K A G E (Fig. 26)
C A U T IO N A ll steering linkage fasteners are im por
tant attaching parts in th at they could affect the
performance o f vital components and systems, and/
or could result in major repair expense. They must
be replaced w ith parts o f the same part numbers or
w ith equivalent parts if replacement becomes neces
sary. Do not use replacement parts o f lesser quality
or substitute design. Torque values must be used as
specified during reassembly to assure proper reten
tion o f these parts.
Tie Rod
N O T E Tie rod adjuster components often become
rusted in service. In such cases, it is recommended
th at if the torque required to remove the nut from
the bolt after breakaway exceeds 7 pound-feet,
discard the nuts and bolts. A p p ly penetrating oil
between the clamp and tube and rotate the clamps
until they move freely. Install new bolts and nuts
having the same part number to assure proper
clamping at the specified nut torque.
Removal
1. Place vehicle on hoist.
2. Rem ove c o tte r pins from ball studs and rem ove castel
la te d nuts.
3. To rem ove o u te r ball stu d , tap o n steering arm at tie rod
en d w ith a ham m er while using a heavy ham m er or
similar tool as a backing (fig. 15).
4. Rem ove inner ball stu d from relay rod using same
procedure as described in Step 3.
5. T o rem ove tie ro d ends from tie ro d , loosen clam p bolts
and unscrew end assemblies.
Fig. 2 6 —Steering Linkage
Installation
1. If the tie rod ends were rem oved, lubricate th e tie rod
threads w ith EP Chassis lube and install ends on tie rod
m aking sure b o th ends are threaded an equal distance
from the tie rod.
2. Make sure th a t threads on ball studs and in ball stu d nuts
are p erfectly clean and sm ooth. Check co n d itio n o f ball
stu d seals; replace if necessary.
N O T E :
If threads are not clean and smooth, ball
studs may turn in tie rod ends when attem pting to
tighten nut.
3. Install ball studs in steering arms and relay rod.
4. Install ball stud n u t, tighten and install new c o tte r pins;
see S pecifications Section at rear o f m anual. L ubricate tie
ro d ends.
5. Rem ove vehicle from hoist.
6
. A djust toe-in as described in Section 3.
C A U T IO N :
Before locking clamp bolts on the
rods, make sure th at tie rod ends are in alignment
w ith th eir ball studs (each ball jo in t is in the center
o f its travel). If the tie rod is not in alignm ent w ith
the studs, binding w ill result. The slit in the tie rod
must be in alignm ent w ith the slot in the clam p. The
sleeve clamps must be positioned between the locat
ing protrusions at each end o f the sleeve.
Relay Rod
Removal
1. Place vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove inner ends o f the tie rods from relay ro d as
described u nder “ Tie R o d —Rem oval.”
3. Rem ove th e c o tte r pins from th e p itm an and idler arm
ball studs a t th e relay ro d . Remove th e castellated nuts.
4. Rem ove th e relay rod from the p itm an and idler arms by
tapping on the relay ro d ball stu d bosses w ith a ham m er,
w hile using a heavy ham m er as a backing (fig. 27).
5. Remove th e relay rod from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Make sure th a t th read s o n th e ball studs and in the ball
stu d n u ts are p erfec tly clean an d sm ooth. C heck con d i
tio n o f ball stud seals; replace if necessary.
