cylinder case.
C A U T I O N :
Installation tool
must
remain
in
position until seal is properly positioned w ith both
ends flush w ith block.
10. R em ove to o l, being careful n o t to w ithdraw seal.
11. Install seal h a lf in bearing cap, again using to o l as a
“ sh o e h o rn ,” feeding seal in to cap using light pressure
w ith th u m b an d finger.
12. Install bearing cap to case w ith sealant applied to the
cap-to-case interface being careful to keep sealant o ff the
seal split line (Fig. 14V).
13. Install th e rear main bearing cap (w ith new seal) and
to rq u e to specifications.
Torsional Damper
Removal
1. Rem ove fan b e lt, fan and pulley.
2. Rem ove th e rad ia to r an d sh ro u d assem bly as outlined in
Section 13.
N O T E :
If additional operations (such as camshaft
removal) are not being perform ed, the radiator
removal will n ot be necessary.
3. Rem ove accessory drive pulley th e n , if so equipped,
rem ove dam per retaining bolt.
4. Install Tool J-23526 o n dam per th e n , tu rn in g puller
screw , rem ove dam per (Fig. 15V).
Installation

1. C oat fro n t cover seal c o n tac t area (o n dam per) w ith
engine oil.
2. Install dam per o n crankshaft as follows:
a.
Install 7 /1 6 ” th read ed end o f Tool J-23523 in to
crankshaft.
C A U T IO N :
Install to ol in crankshaft so th at at
least 1 /2 " o f thread engagement is obtained.
b.
P osition dam per o n crankshaft, aligning dam per
w ith k ey o n crankshaft.
c.
Install plate, th ru st bearing and n u t to com plete
to o l installation.
d.
Pull dam p er in to positio n as show n in Figure 16V.
e.
Rem ove to o l fro m crankshaft th e n install dam per
retaining b o lt and to rq u e to specifications.
3. Install accessory drive pulley.
4. Install fan an d pulley to w ater pum p h u b an d tig h ten
securely.
C A U T IO N : The inertia weight section o f the
torsional damper is assembled to the hub w ith a
rubber typ e material. The installation procedures
(w ith proper to o l) must be follow ed or movement
o f the inertia weight section on the hub w ill destroy
the tuning o f th e torsional damper.
