Hub and Drum (Fig. 20)
Removal
1. Rem ove wheel assembly and axle shaft as specified in
applicable “ Axle S haft R em oval” procedure o f this sec
tion.
2. Disengage tang o f n u t lock from slot or flat o f lo cknut,
then rem ove lo c k n u t from housing tube, using J-2222
to o l (fig.
2 1
).
3. Disengage tang o f n u t lock from slot o f flat o f adjusting
n u t and rem ove nut lock from housing tube.
4. Use tool as specified in Step 2 to remove adjusting n u t
from housing tube.
N O T E :
Remove thrust washer fro m housing tube.
5. Pull hub and drum assem bly straight o ff axle housing.
N O T E :
T he hub oil seal should be replaced w hen
ever the hub is removed fo r any reason.

. Rem ove oil seal.
Cleaning
1. Im m erse bearing cone and roller assemblies in cleaning
solvent. Clean w ith stiff brush to remove old lubricant.
Blow bearings dry w ith com pressed air, directing air
stream across bearing. Do n o t spin bearings while blow ing
them dry.

N O T E :
To remove inner and outer bearings and
cups see "Bearing Cup Replacem ent" fo r various
axles.
2. T horoughly clean all lubricant o f f axle housing tu b e and
o u t o f inside th e hub, wipe dry. Make sure all particles o f
gasket are rem oved from o u te r end o f hub, axle shaft,
and h u b cap.
3. Scrape old sealing com p o u n d o u t o f oil seal bore in the
hub.
Inspection
1. Inspect bearing rollers for excessive w ear, chipped edges,
and o ther damage. Slowly m ove rollers around cone to
detect any flat or rough spots on rollers or cone.
2. Exam ine bearing cups in hu b for pits, cracks, and o ther
damage.
3. Exam ine axle shaft flange studs, wheel studs, hu b splines,
hub bore, and tapped holes for evidence o f dam age—clean
up threads or replace parts w here required.
4. Exam ine oil seal sleeve for evidence o f wear o r roughness,
check axle housing oil deflector and brake drum oil
deflector for evidence o f dam age—replace p arts w here
required.
5. Exam ine brake drum for excessive scoring and o th e r
damage. T o replace brake drum refer to “ Brake D rum
R eplacem ent.”
Bearing Cup
Replacement
R eplace inner cup and outer bearing cup as follows:
1. C ut a suitable length o f 1/2 inch steel bar stock for
press-out tool as show n in Figure 22.
2. Place appropriate press-out tool behind bearing cup,
index tool in provided notches, and press o u t cup w ith an
arbor press.
N O T E :
Hub outer bearing cannot be replaced w ith
inner bearings in position; therefore, replace outer
bearings (if required) before proceeding.
