The follow ing valves can be adjusted w ith engine in

C rank engine u n til m ark on torsional dam per lines
up w ith center o r “

” m ark o n th e tim ing tab and
the engine is in th e num ber 1 firing position. This
may be d eterm ined by placing fingers on the
n um ber
1
cylinder valve as the m ark on the dam per
com es near the “ 0 ” m ark on the fro n t cover. I f the
valves are not m oving, the engine is in the n um ber
1
firing position. I f th e valves move as the m ark
com es up to th e tim ing tab , the engine is in num ber
6
firing positio n and crankshaft should be ro ta te d
one m ore revolution to reach th e num ber
1
position.
b .
Valve ad ju stm en t is m ade by backing o ff th e adjust
ing n u t (rocker arm stu d n u t) until th e re is play in
the push ro d and then tighten n u t to ju st remove all
push rod to rocker arm clearance. This m ay be
determ ined b y ro tatin g push ro d w ith fingers as the
n u t is tightened (Fig. 23). When push rod does n o t
readily move in relation to th e rocker arm , the
clearance has been elim inated. The adjusting n u t
should th e n be tigh ten ed an additional
1
tu rn to
place th e hydraulic lifter plunger in the center o f its
travel. No o th e r ad ju stm en t is required.

With th e engine in the num ber 1 firing position as
d eterm ined above, th e following valves m ay be
adjusted.

4. Clean gasket surfaces on cylinder head(s) and rocker arm
cover(s) w ith degreaser, th e n install rocker arm cover(s),
using new gasket(s), an d to rq u e bolts to specifications.
5. Install d istrib u to r cap and spark plug wire assembly.

. Install rocker arm cover as outlined.
7. A djust carb u reto r idle speed.
