S eparate rear universal jo in t, taping tru n n io n bearings to
jo in t. P osition propeller shaft to one side and tie it to
fram e side rail.
4. Using Tool J-5853 w ith A dapter J-5810 and a suitable
socket on the pin io n flange nut, ro tate the pinion
th ro u g h several com plete revolutions and record the
to rq u e required to keep the pinion turning (fig. 10). If
flange is to be reused, m ark pinion and flange for
reassem bly in the sam e relative position.
5. Install Tool J - 8 6 14-1 on pinion flange and rem ove pinion
flange nut (fig. 11). (P osition J -8 6 14-1 on flange so th at
th e four notches are tow ard flange.) Discard n u t and use
a new one u p o n reassem bly.

. T hread pilot end o f T ool J-8614-3 into small O.D. end o f
J - 8 6 14-2. T hen w ith J - 8 6 14-1 installed as in S tep 4, insert
J-8614-2 in to J-8 6 14-1 and tu rn it 45 degrees to locked
position. Remove flange by turning J-8614-3 while h o ld ­
ing J -8 6 14-1 (fig. 12).
7. P ry old seal o u t o f bore, using a screw driver or a ham m er
and chisel.

. Inspect pinion flange for sm ooth oil seal surface, w orn
drive splines, damages ears, and for sm oothness o f bearing
c o n ta c t surface. R eplace if necessary.
9. I f d eflector requires replacem ent, rem ove by tapping
from flange, clean u p stake points; install new deflector,
and stake deflector a t three new equally spaced positions.

N O T E : Staking operation must be perform ed in
such a manner th at th e seal operating surface is not
damaged.
10. Pack th e cavity betw een th e seal lips o f th e pinion flange
oil seal w ith a lithium -base ex trem e pressure lu bricant.
P osition seal in bore and place gauge plate J-22804-2
(light-duty axle) or J-22804-1 (heavy-duty axle) over seal
and against seal flange. Gauge plate insures p ro p er seating
o f seal in carrier bore.
11. Using Tools J-21468 and J-9458 for light-duty axle (fig.
13) and T ool J-21057 for heavy-duty axle (fig. 14) press
seal in to carrier bore until gauge plate is flush w ith th e
carrier shoulder and seal flange. T urn gauge plate 1 8 0 ”
from installed p osition; seal m ust be square in carrier
bore to seal properly against pinion flange.
12. P osition and align pinion flange o n pinion shaft using
Tools J-9458 and J -8 6 14-1. Tool J-9458-1 is threaded
o n to pinion shaft and n u t tightened against J-9458-2 to
pull flange on shaft (fig. 15). Rem ove J —9458 after
flange is seated.
