ACCELERATOR LINKAG E
Lubricate w ith engine oil every 12,000 miles as follow s:
1. On V8 engine, lubricate th e ball stu d a t the carburetor
lever.
2. On L6 engine, lubricate th e tw o ball studs at the
carburetor lever and lubricate th e lever m ounting stud.
Do n o t lubricate th e accelerator cable.

Check th e fluid level at each engine oil change period. To
m ake an accurate fluid level check:
1. Drive vehicle several miles, m aking freq u en t starts and
stops, to bring transm ission u p to norm al operating
tem p eratu re (approxim ately 180-190° F).
2. Park vehicle o n a level surface.
3. Place selector level in “ P ark ” an d leave engine running.
4. R em ove dipstick and w ipe clean.
5. R einsert dipstick until cap seats.
6. R em ove dipstick and n o te reading.
If oil level is a t o r below th e ADD m ark o n th e dipstick, oil
should be added as necessary. One p in t raises th e level from
ADD to FU LL.
Do n ot overfill.
U nder norm al driving conditio n s, th e transm ission fluid
should be changed every 2 4 ,0 0 0 m iles. I f th e vehicle is driven
extensively in heavy city traffic during h o t w eather, o r is used
to pull a trailer, change fluid every 12,000 miles. Likewise,
o p era to rs o f trucks in com m ercial use w here the engine idles
for long periods, should change fluid every 12,000 miles.

remove fluid from
th e transm ission sum p, add ap proxim ately 2-1/2 qts. U.S.
m easure (2 qts. Im perial m easure) for the T urbo H ydra-M atic
35 0 o f fresh fluid, to re tu rn level to p ro p er m ark on the
dipstick.

3-Speed and 4-Speed—every 6 ,0 0 0 miles or 4 m o n th s—
check a t o p erating tem p eratu re and fill as necessary to level o f
filler plug hole w ith SAE 80 or SAE 90 GL-5 gear lubricant.
Where am b ien t tem peratures below freezing (+ 3 2 °F .) are
ex p ected , use only SAE 80 GL-5 G ear L ubricant. SAE 90 Gear
L u b rican t should be used only w here am bient tem peratures
are co n tin u o u sly above + 3 2 °F .
TRANSM ISSION S H IFT LINKAGE

Every 6 ,0 0 0 miles or 4 m o n th s—lubricate shift linkage and,
on M anual transm ission floor c o n tro l, lever contacting faces
w ith w ater resistant EP chassis lub rican t w hich m eets GM
S pecification GM 6 0 3 1M.
CLUTCH
The clu tch pedal free travel should be checked at regular
intervals.
L ubricate the clutch cross-shaft a t fittin g (on Series 10
F orw ard C ontrol models also lubricate the clu tch linkage idler
lever at fitting) every 6 ,0 0 0 miles or 4 m onths w ith w ater
resistant EP chassis lub rican t w hich m eets G eneral M otors
S pecification #GM -6031M .
REAR AXLES
Standard
Every 4 m onths or 6 ,0 0 0 miles, w hichever occurs first,
check lu bricant level and add lu b rican t, if necessary, to fill to
level o f filler plug hole. Use GL-5 G ear L ubricant as show n in
the follow ing table.

On 20 or 30 Series trucks, drain lub rican t every 2 4,000
miles. If vehicle is operated in exceptionally heavy w ork or at
contin u o u s high speeds, th e lu b ric an t should be changed every
12,000 miles. It m ay be necessary to change lubricant m ore
o ften if vehicle is used o ff ro ad in d u sty areas.
Positraction
Same intervals as standard axle but use only th e special
P ositraction lub rican t available at yo u r au th o rized dealer.
PROPELLER SHAFT SLIP JOINTS
P ropeller shaft slip jo in ts should be lubricated every 6,000
miles or 4 m o n th s w ith w ater resistant EP chassis lubricant
w hich m eets G eneral M otors S pecification GM 6 0 3 1M.
U N IVER SA L JOINTS
All universal jo in ts are th e needle bearing ty p e. L ubricate
those universal jo in ts (depending o n tru ck m odel) equipped
w ith lube fittings every 6 ,0 0 0 miles o r 4 m onths w ith w ater
resistant EP chassis lub rican t w hich m eets G eneral M otors
S pecification GM 6031M . More frequent lubes m ay be
required on heavy d u ty or “ O ff th e R o ad ” operations.
