GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Air cleaners on all m odels operate prim arily to rem ove dust
and dirt from air before it is draw n in to the carburetor and
engine. The air cleaner also helps to reduce engine noise and
quenches any flam e th a t m ay be caused by engine backfire
through th e carburetor.
Tw o types o f air cleaners are used. They are the oil w etted
paper elem ent air cleaner and the oil bath air cleaner.
The oil w etted paper elem ent air cleaner (Fig. 1A) consists
o f an accordion pleated oiled paper filter supporte; by wire
m esh w ith a plastisol seal on b o th to p and b o tto m .
The oil bath air cleaner (Fig. 2A) utilizes an oil sum p in the
air cleaner b o tto m and a fibre elem ent.
MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE
Carburetor A ir Cleaner Elem ent—
U nder norm al operating co n
ditions, th e carburetor air cleaner elem ent should be replaced
every 2 4,000 miles on V

engines an d 12,000 miles on L

engines. O peration o f vehicle in dusty areas will cause rapid
clogging o f elem ent and enrichm ent o f carburetor m ixture.
U nder these conditions, the elem ent m ust be replaced m ore
frequently.
Therm ostatically Controlled A ir Cleaner—
T he air cleaner
should be inspected to m ake certain th a t all hoses and ducts
are in ta ct and correctly installed. O perational fu n ctio n should
be checked by inspecting position o f valve in air intake. W ith
engine sto p p ed , valve should be open. A t u n d erh o o d tem p er
ature below
100
°F , w ith engine running, valve should be
partially or fully closed. As engine u n d erh o o d tem perature
rises, the valve should open.
ELEMENT REPLACEMENT
1. Remove air cleaner cover.
2. Rem ove elem ent.
3. Rem ove b o tto m section o f air cleaner and remove and
discard air cleaner gasket.
4. Clean b o tto m section o f air cleaner and air cleaner cover
thoroughly.
N O T E : Check air cleaner cover seal fo r tears or
cracks.
5. Install b o tto m section o f air cleaner w ith a new air
cleaner gasket.
6
. Install new paper elem ent on b o tto m section o f air
cleaner w ith either end up.
7. Install air cleaner cover.
