Modes of Operation
This chapter describes the SmartPass modes of operation.
Overview
SmartPass
®
readers support the following modes of operation:
•
Data mode
•
Command mode
•
Buffer control mode
•
Download mode
Data Mode
Except for three host commands, the reader initiates all communications as data
messages (tag IDs and reports) in data mode. The reports provide information on
input status changes (input0 and input1), a presence without tag, and buffer
overflow.
The host can initiate the following three commands during data mode: switch to
command mode (01), switch to download mode (05), and invoke check tag (8110). If
error correcting protocol is being used, acknowledgment or negative
acknowledgment command messages are returned by the host, depending on whether
a properly verified message was received from the reader.
If buffer control mode is disabled (command 6160), the reader will transmit the
following messages asynchronously:
•
Tag data
•
Presence without tag reports
•
Input status change reports
•
Error0x messages (buffer 50%, 75%, or 100% full)
•
Two-line sign-on message
Upon power-up or software reset (command 63), the reader transmits a two-line sign-
on message that conforms to the data message format.
Each line of the sign-on message must be acknowledged separately by the host. With
error correcting protocol (ECP), the first line of the sign-on message will always
